Excerpt: ... curious individual who insists upon carrying with him, wherever he goes, all his insular prejudices and eccentricities, as snails do their houses, who makes no attempt to conform to the usages, or learn the language of the people among whom he travels, and who must have his bacon and eggs, his tea and toast, his lunch and his lawn-tennis, whether such things are indigenous to the soil or not. We were so fortunate as to meet with travelling companions of a decidedly higher order than those above referred to. We fell in with English, French, Germans, Portuguese, and a solitary Dutchman, and we found them for the most part agreeable and intelligent people. But with improving accommodation, and increased facilities for travelling, it must be expected that Spain will be sought after as other European countries have been. With the gain, however, there is sure to be some loss. But in any case I hope to go back there again as soon as circumstances will allow me to do so. As regards the language, I derived much assistance from a book of dialogues with the title, 'L'Espagnol tel qu'on le parle, ou recueil de conversations espagnoles et franchises, avec la prononciation figuree par des sons francis, a l'usage des Franqais qui vont en Espagne, par Jose M. Lopes.' It has been observed with as much wit as truth that books of this sort u are chiefly remarkable for never in any instance containing anything that any one would have occasion to say to any one else under any circumstances whatever.' But' L'Espagnol tel qu'on le parle ' is an exception to this somewhat sweeping verdict, and does not belie its title. I found it a decidedly useful collection of phrases.
